Boston-Power Sponsors International evGrandPrix Electric Vehicle Competition

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. and BEIJING, CHINA, May 15th, 2014- Boston-Power Inc., an industry leading developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries and energy storage technologies, today announced its sponsorship of the 2014 International evGrandPrix race event held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 13th-15th. The event, organized by Purdue University, is an electric go-kart race and engineering design competition involving colleges and universities from the United States, China and Canada.

Now in its fourth year, the International evGrandPrix was launched in 2010 as part of Purdue's electric vehicle initiative to educate and train the workforce needed to design, manufacture and maintain advanced electric vehicles based on clean energy technologies. The teams were judged on their ability to demonstrate exceptional performance in terms of kart design, battery efficiency and race placement in the 50 lap event.

In addition to being the primary sponsor of this year's International evGrandPrix, Boston-Power donated its battery products to be used in the building of several of the karts' battery packs competing in the race. Boston-Power worked directly with teams at Purdue University as well as sponsoring the first-ever China team from Zhejiang University to participate in the event. Using Boston-Power technology in their karts, Purdue University captured 1st and 2nd place while the Chinese team was awarded "Best Team Effort" for their strong initiative and creativity in creating Zhejiang's first-ever electric race vehicle from the ground up.

The technology at the core of powering these battery packs is Boston-Power's industry leading Swing® 5300  high-energy density lithium ion cells. These cells are then used in conjunction with Boston Power's Swing Key® 442 block product which serves as a standard "building block" for electric vehicle (EV) battery packs. Together they offer industry leading energy density, unparalleled safety and ease of implementation that requires no cell welding by the pack builder. Boston-Power's next generation pack building system, Swing Ensemble®, is due out later this year.

This year, 21 teams from 10 schools competed in the event including a first-ever China team from Zhejiang University, Purdue University, University of Oklahoma, Southern Polytechnic State University, and the University of Windsor in Canada.
